Queen's Senior Secondary School in Ahwiaso

Ghana

HI has set up a scheme to support the education of girls in secondary and tertiary institutions, called the Mariama Scholarship project. The project was inspired by the visit of the Chairman to Ghana in October 2011 to Queen's Senior Secondary School in Ahwiaso paramount chiefdom, Western Region, a remote, heavily forested area, where girls, in particular, have little access to modern education. The boarding school for girls was started by the community and depends only, or largely, on community funds, which are in very scarce supply because of acute unemployment in the area. The Chairman decided to award three scholarships. The decision came at a critical time for the school and the funds from the scholarships would be used in reducing operational arrears, whilst enabling the girls (all of whom were orphaned) to go to school. The girls were selected by school and community representatives.
